Consumer Checklist for the Installation of Carpet

The installation of carpet is the most important function to be performed once you have selected your carpet and its intended use. There are a number of things you can do and know which can help you obtain an installation job that meets your satisfaction and needs.

Make a sketch: It is helpful to make a rough sketch of the area to be carpeted with approximate measurements. Document all doors, windows, closets and unusual angles in the room on your sketch. Prior to actual installation, have your carpet retailer or installation company to take accurate measurements.

Seams: Prior to installation, make sure there is agreement between you and your carpet retailer as to the location of all the carpet seams that may be required. Usually, seams are best laid toward a primary natural light source. Visibility of the seams will vary with different types of carpet. Please understand that most carpet seams cannot be guaranteed undetectable.

Carpet size: Be sure there is an understanding of the exact amount of carpet required for each location to be carpeted. Most carpet is made in standard widths. Please understand that there is a good chance for some small overages due to corners, room size, etc. This is normal.

Cushion: Be sure to have the appropriate type of cushion (underlay or padding) laid to serve your specific needs. It may differ from room to room. There are many different types of cushion available. Be sure to discuss your options at the time you purchase your carpet.

Moving furniture: Do you plan to move your own furniture out of the room or do you expect the installers to move the furniture for you? If you would like the installers to move your furniture, there may be an extra charge involved. You may wish to move cherished or fragile items yourself.

Appliances: In the event that appliances require a utility disconnect (water, gas, etc.), local code requirements and disconnect and reconnect arrangements are to be determined in advance.
Removal of existing carpet: Before installation, discuss who is expected to remove the existing carpet and cushion and if the cost of that task is included. Be sure to advise the installers whether or not you wish to keep that carpet or have it taken away.
