TILE
Q: What is the difference between ceramic & porcelain tile?
A: Both ceramic & porcelain tile are made from clay or a mixture of clay and other materials, then kiln-fired; both are considered to be a part of the larger classification called “Ceramic Tiles”.
Ceramic tiles are usually made from white or white clay fired in a kiln and are usually finished with a durable glaze which carries the color and pattern.
- Used for wall and floor tile applications
- Suitable for light to moderate traffic
- Have a relatively high water absorption rating
- Are less frost resistant making them more prone to wear and chipping than porcelain tiles
Porcelain tiles are made from fine – usually white – clay, which results in a tile that is dense, impervious, fine grained and smooth, with a sharply formed face.
- Have a much lower water absorption rate than ceramic tiles
- Are frost resistant or frost-proof
- Are harder and more wear and damage resistant than ceramic tiles
- Suitable for most applications from light traffic to heavy residential or light commercial traffic

WINDOW TREATMENTS
Q. What is the best product to use to darken my bedroom?
A. A room darkening cellular shade is probably the most commonly used product to darken a bedroom since the life cords run between layers of fabric. There are no holes through the shade so light will not pass through it. Remember that a shade mounted inside the casing will normally allow light to pass around the edges of the shade, so consider mounting the shade in the outside of the casing so that there is a greater area where the shade overlaps the casing. Hunter Douglas has a ‘side rack’ option that can be used. It encases the shade within the window and helps to keep light from bleeding past. Come into Coronado Paint & Decorating to look our selection of window treatments.
Q. What makes a Smartstrand carpet environmentally friendly?
A. The Smartstrand fiber was developed by Dupont, and is made up of 37% renewable resources including a specially designed corn sugar. The production of the polymer requires 30% less energy than the production of nylon fibers; and the green house gas emissions are 63% lower than nylon manufacturing which is equal to about one gallon of gasoline saved for every seven yards of carpet produced. Also, Smartstrand fiber does not need extra stain protection added. It is built right into the nature of the fiber and will never wear or wash off.
Q. How do I remove a stain from my carpet?
A. Coronado Paint & Decorating carries several manufacturers of carpet. Visit Abbey Carpet at http://www.abbeycarpet.com/Products/Carpet/CarpetCare.aspx. This web page offers many solutions to carpet care.
Wood Flooring
Q. I love the look of wood flooring, but living in Santa Fe, New Mexico, I’m concerned about the dryness of our climate. I heard that wood flooring might shrink causing gaps. What is your opinion?
A. You have several options. One approach is to use an ‘engineered wood’ floor. This flooring is veneered layers of wood plied together which give the whole plank greater stability. You can also consider using a wide-array of laminate flooring with integrated wood graining on the surface. This is virtually impossible to tell from real wood in most cases. Another option is vinyl flooring – some of which is hard to tell from wood flooring as wood design is incorporated in the product. Come in and visit us at Coronado Paint & Decorating to look at the various options that are on display.
Q. What type of underlayment do I use for wood or Laminate?
A. There is a wide selection of products available. The one that is best for you depends largely on the type of sound deadening characteristics that you desire. Our professional sales people at Coronado Paint & Decorating would love to meet you and discuss the alternatives with you. Stop in to see us soon.
